of buzzer beers and rock royales
for the longest i never understood why minbin was a rare pair. i still don’t. they have so much in common —their skzoo figures being bunnies, them going to gym, them being in hyungline and basically having titles of chan’s right/left hands, them being flirty as fuck and have good chemistry. because minho teases a lot, and changbin whines a lot, they work SO WELL together. please buff bunny boys, shouldn’t they thrive? especially after case 143 stages, because they’ve kept feeling each other, always soooooo touchy touchy. i was dying.
i’m rambling and i didn’t even start talking about the fic. back to the topic.
so, my kick to write for them was minbin bingo hosted on twitter. my bingo card included space and royalty and i knew i had to put them together. and then i saw this while i was collecting inspiration:

diamond crematoriums! what a nice concept, i could have a nice, angsty fic that touches on death, grief, the pain of losing a loved one, and the lingering memories thereafter. a stupid gemstone —valuable physically, yet holding zero value when your heart has lost an important piece in the form of a person. no diamonds could ever be enough to fill that void.
but the downside was, 1) i did a similar concept recently with a minsung fic and it was quite heavy, 2) i wasn’t in the mood for angst. at least, not in the beginning, because you see, minbin has a very interesting dynamic. they bicker a lot. minho frightens changbin a lot. he goes after him because changbin always responds in an amusing way. so i thought, why shouldn’t i make minho torment changbin’s daily life? but that’s just him being himself and him sucking at flirting. what if he scared the shit out of changbin in every encounter? so that basically evolved into a 5+1 minbin space royalty au where changbin had his logical reasons to believe minho was some sort of a criminal. and oh boy, minho gave him many reasons.
but time in space is different. people obviously adjust according to their needs and adapt to a new sort of living. so, they use heartbeats to measure time and their wristwatches for anything that requires extensive calculation.
the earth? i think it is already gone or treated like an archeological site. some parts are preserved in multiple space stations because 1) obviously scientific reasons, 2) nostalgia factor, 3) it’s treated as an attraction. the scientific reasons are pretty much straight forward. that’s how you keep the information and develop the said information for a better future. the nostalgia, because well people are still emotional after all. and we are sentimental beings, usually in search of where we belong. the space is vast, and people are contained in the smallest possible life bubbles. the earth used to be a buffer because although a human was directly in contact with the space (sun, moon, stars etc) none had actual possibility to leave earth. people then had limitations but they lived in a sizable container which was already big enough. people now were squeezed in places that had population limits but they are also have the whole space to themselves because space has no end.
does that make sense? i tend to associate nostalgia with sense of belonging (my background in architecture also fuels this probably) and the dichotomy between the never ending space vs the limited living containers aka space stations seemed interesting.
this becomes apparent in part 4 when changbin’s strapped to the machine and can’t move.
and lastly, attractions. anything can be attraction. life in space is quick. trends change in the blink of an eye. but the earth is almost always inaccessible, not fully at least. so it is a trend, just like how the bars, pubs, parks etc change according to what is on demand and what are the emerging themes.
the hole we see in part 3 also starts from a trend but it is like a black hole, a void of space where physics or rules don’t work. sure people go there to drink but the main reason is usually visiting a government approved area where they can anonymously explore their raw, animalistic sides freely. the holes have a pit in the middle where anyone can join and fight. people can die, people can get seriously injured. but that’s the hole, and it is their decision. the people there watch what unfolds, equally stimulated with their fights.
of course drinks! the part i’ve enjoyed the most are writing the drinks haha and here comes the part where i’ll share another inspiration that helped me with this fic. these are 2064: read only memories and VA-11 HALL-A. i played the latter few years ago, it’s a visual novel and bartender simulator game. 2064: read only memories is what i’m currently playing. they are both fun, and had such pretty drinks so i wanted to have something similar. (which also resulted in how i named the fic)
changbin and minho sharing similar interests when it comes to what they drink = the most mundane drinks that exist: buzzer beers and rock royales = them being in search of something simple but enjoyable: a love that is easy to grow into something more
they make it complicated enough in the beginning, when minho is not truly honest with changbin and changbin lashing out with the slightest provocation in order to protect himself. in truth, they both find happiness in simpler and slower interests.
but also pomegranates. pomegranates are important in this context, both ties pomegranates with their past failed relationships. although neither the greeks or the romans mean much when it comes to a station floating in space, pomegranates still held in higher values mean their importance is not entirely overlooked and of course there are still space people who are interested in mythological tales.
in myths, demeter grieves for persephone’s disappearance and the earth weeps, crops die, fertile lands turn dry. the winter comes, life pauses. when persephone returns to the surface, the earth blooms, crops give fruit. life starts. it is a cycle.
so a relationship ends, another starts. which is what they are running around.
and of course it works out at the end, because well i want them together lol because this fic is supposed to be %99 fluff (bickering and teasing as love language) and %1 rest but the hurt/comfort gives a nice flavor, so i had to.
side not: yorkshire tea wasn't supposed to debut but while searching for another brand, i found a big box of yorkshire tea —opened but not used. it was a small gift when i was back from the uk for a time being.

main idea & inspiration
this document has been sitting around, half empty and half written. truthfully, i've been struggling to piece my words together (writing fatigue? can i call what i’m feeling writing fatigue?) and my coffee machine was broken (which i will blame for my lack of ability to write a fic talk)for the longest i never understood why minbin was a rare pair. i still don’t. they have so much in common —their skzoo figures being bunnies, them going to gym, them being in hyungline and basically having titles of chan’s right/left hands, them being flirty as fuck and have good chemistry. because minho teases a lot, and changbin whines a lot, they work SO WELL together. please buff bunny boys, shouldn’t they thrive? especially after case 143 stages, because they’ve kept feeling each other, always soooooo touchy touchy. i was dying.

worldbuilding / lore
the fic is set in an unnamed space station (because i suck at coming up with names and didn’t find any reason to name where everything was happening). to be honest, i didn’t start this one with a world and it’s own lore ready beforehand. this one rather came together after i wrote the first part. i thought about slightly weird communities. that is, however, not to say they are actually weird. but weird because their lifestyle is different, because it evolved into something we would find difficult to implement in our daily lives. since, why the hell would we use heartbeats to calculate our time in earth?but time in space is different. people obviously adjust according to their needs and adapt to a new sort of living. so, they use heartbeats to measure time and their wristwatches for anything that requires extensive calculation.

symbolism
which also brings us to how i’m almost always goner for little details like this when i’m reading/watching something. they are integral parts of the characters' existence.. for example, chungking express and spirited away. the food holds a significant semiotic value in these titles, they are in fact plot devices albeit in different scales.changbin and minho sharing similar interests when it comes to what they drink = the most mundane drinks that exist: buzzer beers and rock royales = them being in search of something simple but enjoyable: a love that is easy to grow into something more

conclusion
i’ve attempted to write a part focusing on their relationship but i think it was already pretty self explanatory. they are both very emotionally driven characters, and both are far from being perfect. it’s just they are so attuned with each other, like puzzle piece, they navigate around each other and willingly fix things, not cover them up in the excuse of attraction/affection. that’s why they are also very upfront with how this is just the beginning for them and they want to grow more loving the other.and of course it works out at the end, because well i want them together lol because this fic is supposed to be %99 fluff (bickering and teasing as love language) and %1 rest but the hurt/comfort gives a nice flavor, so i had to.
